Brooming the house at night is inauspicious

Sweeping the house at night is inauspicious.

Not just in India but in many countries, sweeping the house with a broom is considered inauspicious. Does inappropriate timings of cleaning the house bring bad luck? Should brooming be done only after looking at the clock? These are the questions that make us ponder over the logic behind such a vague ideology.

I don't say that it is all rubbish and one should not follow the above rule just because it is being followed for centuries, but I only believe that we should at least try to see what were the reasons our parents or grandparents or may be their parents have said so.

If we look carefully, the answer to this statement makes us look back to the times when
electricity was a far reach from our homes, the only sources of light in the evening were either the moon light or the rusty looking lanterns or may be the earthen pots lit with mustard oil and cotton. The only thing common in all the above sources of light is that they all are dim, where one can barely see each other with huge amount of dark shadows covering every corner of the home.

In such a scenario, brooming indeed will prove inauspicious to someone if by chance the one who brooms (In general, they are the female members of the house, who are usually clad with jewellery and ornaments which tend to fall while doing some brisk things like brooming or walking) mistakenly sweeps out something important out of the premises.
Another thing one can assume is even if there are no chances of any fall of jewellery or brooming out of some other important stuff, One has to acknowledge the fact that cleaning of a room requires a lot of looking here and there in search of dust and dirt, which is not possible in bad light. And  even if you try, there are fair chances that the person will be leaving one or the other place untouched or badly clean, resulting in a shear waste of time and energy. And going further there are chances that one may hurt herself/himself while brooming near hard furniture items in the room under lack of proper lighting.

Hence, we should consider that our forefathers despite being less knowledgeable than what we consider ourselves, had applied their brains before claiming any thing to be bad or inauspicious. it is rather us who are either following or not following their statements without applying a proper rationale.

And now there is a happy news to all those who still believe that brooming is inauspicious at night and on rainy days. You may broom, dust, wipe or wash out anything at your home at any time of the day or night till your room bulbs or light sources are working fine.

Happy Brooming.
